SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health is reporting 388 new positive COVID-19 tests and two deaths from the disease Sunday.

That brings the state to a total of 54,660 confirmed cases and 422 deaths since the pandemic began. About 8,005 total cases are considered active and 46,233 are considered recovered.

According to health department spokesperson Charla Haley, the new deaths Sunday include two women, both ages 65 to 84, who were hospitalized at the time of their deaths. One was from Utah County and the other was from Davis County.

The health department says it has received results for 4,770 new Utahns' tests since Saturday's report. With the update, the seven-day average of positive cases in Utah is back below 400 at 397, and the positive test percentage during that time is 9.5%.

Currently, the health department says 120 Utahns are hospitalized due to COVID-19 and 49 are in intensive care for it. Just under 70% of the state's ICU beds are currently in use and about 54% of its non-ICU beds are occupied.

Since the outbreak hit the state, the health department says 3,207 total Utahns have been hospitalized for it. The state has conducted 858,664 total tests on 688,735 different Utahns in the past six months, meaning about one-fifth of Utahns have been tested but less than 2% have had a positive test.

Gov. Gary Herbert and health officials are expected to update the public on the coronavirus pandemic in Utah during a news conference this week. The conference generally occurs on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Methodology:

Test results now include data from PCR tests and antigen tests. Positive COVID-19 test results are reported to the health department immediately after they are confirmed, but negative test results may not be reported for 24 to 72 hours.

The total number of cases reported by the Utah Department of Health each day includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah's outbreak began, including those who are currently infected, those who have recovered from the disease, and those who have died.

Recovered cases are defined as anyone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 three or more weeks ago and has not died.

Deaths reported by the state typically occurred two to seven days prior to when they are reported, according to the health department. Some deaths may be from even further back, especially if the person is from Utah but has died in another state.

The health department reports both confirmed and probable COVID-19 case deaths per the case definition outlined by the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. The death counts are subject to change as case investigations are completed.
