Canal Fire burns 78,000 acres, 95% contained

As of Monday, the Millard County Canal Fire had burned 78,065 acres and was 95% contained — hours earlier it had been 93% contained. The lightning-caused fire began on June 26 about 3 miles north of Oak Creek Canyon.

These weather conditions are expected to continue throughout the week, making the potential for new fire starts, or rapid fire growth greater. 54-acre Summit Fire in Iron County 75% contained

A 54-acre fire burning in Iron County, dubbed the Summit Fire, was 75% contained as of Monday night, fire officials said. The blaze, caused on Monday by mowing dry grass in dry conditions, did not threaten any structures. Southwest winds with gusts up to 30 mph drove the fire — which was near Old Highway 91 between Summit and Parowan. An aggressive attack by 11 engines, one bulldozer, a helicopter and several firefighters from multiple agencies kept the fire to 54 acres in extremely hot, dry and windy conditions. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Knolls Fire closure order rescinded

A closure order issued for the Knolls Fire was rescinded on Monday after the human-caused fire reached 100% containment on Saturday. The fire began on June 28 south of Saratoga Springs and west of Utah Lake. As of Sunday evening, firefighters continued to work on hot spots within the perimeter. The prevention order restricted the public from visiting south of Israel Canyon on the west side of the Lake Mountains, east of the ridgeline, north of the Solder Pass County Road and west of Utah Lake. Officials still asked the public to use caution when visiting the land as fire crews will continue to monitor the area for the next few days.

68 fires reported over July 4th weekend, bringing state total to 644

Nearly 70 fires were reported across the state over the July 4th weekend, fire officials reported on Monday. Fireworks played a role in 18 of the fires and the blazes brought Utah’s total to 644 wildfires, 520 of which were human-caused. Discharging fireworks is banned statewide until July 22-25, for Pioneer Day.
