UVU commencement rescheduled to Aug. 19

Utah Valley University has rescheduled its commencement exercises to Aug. 19 at the UCCU Center because of the current pandemic. Convocations of UVU’s colleges and schools will be held the following day at various venues and times. “Graduation marks the completion of a remarkable educational journey and the celebration of a true achievement,” UVU President Astrid S. Tuminez said in a statement. The rescheduling of the graduation ceremonies reflects UVU’s commitment to care for its students, the statement notes. Read the full story here

104 new cases, 1 new COVID-19 death reported Saturday

In its daily update of COVID-19 cases in the state, the Utah Department of Health revealed 104 new positive tests and one additional death. That brings the total to of 2,206 cases and 18 deaths in Utah since the pandemic began. The health departments reports 1,784 new tests were conducted. Collaborative project allowing Utahns to help make masks, PPE

ProjectProtect, a collaborative project that allows Utahns to make personal protective equipment for medical providers across the state, has now launched. The collaboration involves Intermountain Healthcare, University of Utah Health, Latter-day Saint Charities, and other Utah nonprofits. ProjectProtect will provide materials to volunteers, who can make masks using provided patterns. Learn more and sign up to help here.

Intermountain sending caregivers to assist NYC hospitals

Intermountain Healthcare announced Saturday it will send two COVID-19 response teams to New York City the week of April 13. The clinicians will assist New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Northwell Health, according to an Intermountain news release. "These healthcare systems will aim to return the favor by supporting Intermountain as much as they can when Utah faces its own surge with COVID-19 patients," it says. Each team of 50 volunteers includes physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, respiratory therapists and more. They will serve in New York for up to two weeks.

SLCC to move all summer courses online

Salt Lake Community College will offer courses online only this summer, a spokesperson announced Saturday. In addition, the college will postpone a planned 1.5% tuition increase until the spring 2021 semester and will waive its online course fee for all classes. The deadline to apply for the summer semester is May 13, and the last day to register is May 27. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Troopers see surge in speeding as traffic drops due to pandemic

Data from the Utah Department of Transportation confirmed traffic volume is down and speeding is up during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utah Highway Patrol troopers started pulling over more lead-footed drivers not long after the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” directive went into effect. “I’ve seen a lot of really high speeds, very egregious speeding violations,” said UHP Corporal Mike Alexander, who patrols Utah County. He said spotting a driver going 30 mph over the limit has been common ever since COVID-19 started to reduce the number of cars on the road. Read the full story here. — Jed Boal, KSL TV

ICYMI: Catch up on coronavirus developments from yesterday

On Friday, Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 126 from Thursday, with four new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health.

The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus hit 100,000 as Christians around the globe marked a Good Friday unlike any other — in front of computer screens instead of in church pews — and some countries tiptoed toward reopening segments of their battered economies.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert extended the state’s stay-home directive through May 1 on Friday after announcing the directive would be extended through April on Thursday.

American Fork-based cloud software company DOMO was forced to cut roughly 10% of its workforce due to the economic impact caused by the novel coronavirus outbreak. In all, about 90 people were laid off.
