SALT LAKE CITY — Three people were injured Friday night in a shooting outside The Complex concert venue, Salt Lake City Police Lt. Carlos Valencia confirmed.

Shortly after 10 p.m., gunshots were reported outside the building, located at 536 W. 100 South.

As three people were walking westbound away from The Complex, shots were fired at them from a white vehicle, Valencia said. The vehicle was westbound on 100 South heading toward 600 West.

After shots were fired, the vehicle sped away northbound from 100 South, Valencia said.

One of the three individuals shot back with their own gun. Valencia said police are still investigating why that individual had a gun.

The department tweeted Saturday morning that the shooting occurred after an argument on the street and may be gang-related.

One person was shot in the chest and was in stable condition, Valencia said. One juvenile was shot in the foot, possibly by a bullet ricochet.

The third person’s injuries weren’t immediately known but Valencia said they were at a local hospital. In the Saturday tweet, police said all three are expected to recover.

The driver had not been located Friday night and police didn’t have a description beyond the vehicle being a white older-style vehicle, that could possibly be a Kia.

Salt Lake police had a busy night downtown Friday night. Just 30 minutes before the shooting, Vivint Arena was evacuated after the Utah Jazz game due to a suspicious package that turned out to be a toolbox.

The two incidents were not related, Valencia said.

According to the venue’s website, Shoreline Mafia was scheduled to perform Friday night. Doors were expected to open at 6 p.m. for the event.

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact them at 801-799-3000 and reference case number 19-220543.
