A Fruit More Desirable Than All Other Fruit

Elder Neil L. Andersen spoke about Lehi’s dream, a story representing life’s journey as told by a prophet in the Book of Mormon. More specifically, Elder Andersen encouraged members to not let distractions keep them from partaking of the fruit of the tree. In the dream, people walk along a narrow path toward a beautiful tree heavy with fruit. The tree, Elder Andersen said, represents the love of God, and its fruit represents happiness, everlasting life and the blessings of Jesus Christ’s atonement. When the people in the dream reach the tree, they partake of the fruit and find the joy and happiness they were seeking. The fruit is also symbolizes the joy the gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its ordinances bring to its members, Elder Andersen said. And in this day and age, Satan is working overtime to distract God's children from this path, the tree and the joy they are seeking, he said.

Take Up Our Cross

When Jesus Christ revealed to His disciples what he would suffer during the crucifixion, He taught them about death and resurrection, or the joining together of the body and spirit after their separation at death. His disciples didn’t understand Him at the time, and even Peter told Christ that that would not happen to Him. To help His disciples understand the level of sacrifice His mission required, Christ said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” Through this declaration, Christ emphasized that those willing to follow Him must deny themselves and control their desires, appetites and passions, sacrificing everything, said Elder Ulisses Soares, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Many may question why, even though they do their best to “take up (their) cross),” things are difficult or aren’t working out for them, Elder Soares explained. Those who still haven’t found a spouse, who are experiencing same-gender attraction, or who have been divorced or widowed, may feel that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not for them anymore.

Even those who have committed serious sins can humble themselves before God and forsake those sins, the apostle added.

Power to Overcome the Adversary

In his Sunday afternoon address, Elder Peter M. Johnson of the church’s Quorum of the Seventy, outlined the ways in which Satan tries to limit people’s earthly and heavenly potential, and provided solutions to stop him from doing this. Elder Johnson said Satan has three main tools: deception, distraction and discouragement. He said Satan deceives people by telling them they are not children of God; he distracts people with a variety of worldly things, including social media and technology; and he discourages people by encouraging feelings of not being good enough.

Giving Our Spirit Control Over Our Bodies

Last year, President M. Russell Ballard, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, wrote a general conference talk about what happens after someone dies. Just a few days after he turned his talk in for translation, his wife, Barbara Ballard, died. Since then, he has had weeks, months and now a year to fully understand what it means to truly weep and grieve over the loss of loved ones, he said. Yet everyone will die, and President Ballard has spent time wondering, as well, whether he is doing enough to live right and do what God expects of him.

Everyone’s primary battle is between their spiritual self and their carnal self, or the part of them that wants things “right now,” he said.

Knowing, Loving and Growing

Elder Hans Theodorus Boom of the Quorum of the Seventy told church members how each person and the roles they play are needed in the world and the church. He shared a story of seeing the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square perform in the Netherlands at a temple dedication. In one song, a large gong was used. Elder Boom said he thought of how seemingly insignificant that gong’s role was in view of the entire performance, but how vital it was to enhance the performance of that one song.

And to do that effectively, church members need only love and minister to one another. Elder Boom said there is no need to tell family members what changes they need to make to become better; they know what they need to do. It's only necessary to provide a loving environment to empower them to make those changes. For those who don’t know what their role in this life or this church is, Elder Boom suggested they ask God, and promised that He will answer any questions.

Holiness and the Plan of Happiness

The first time President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the First Presidency, entered a temple, he walked ahead of his parents and into an open space where everything was sparkling white. He looked up at a ceiling so high it seemed an open sky, he said. In that moment, President Eyring said he had a clear impression that he had been there before. Then, a soft voice came that wasn’t his own. The voice told him he had never been there before, but that he was remembering a moment before he was born when he was waiting for the Savior to come to him. He was happy, he said, because he was eager to see Jesus Christ.

“The Holy Ghost speaks in a still, small voice. I can hear Him when there is spiritual peace in my heart. He brings a feeling of happiness and assurance that I am becoming more holy.”#PresEyring #GeneralConference

The Second Great Commandment

President Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, concluded the Sunday morning session by thanking church members for their efforts in gathering Israel and keeping covenants. He spoke of three recent moments that were meaningful to him.

Nelson (@NelsonRussellM) October 6, 2019 First, President Nelson recounted a trip to Auckland, New Zealand, where he met with Imams of the Christchurch mosques months after the mosques were attacked by a gunman during worship. They spoke of their shared commitment to religious freedom, and President Nelson offered help with rebuilding their damaged mosques. Second, he told of meeting thankful, joyful members and non-members in Argentina who were provided wheelchairs from church charities. Third, President Nelson spoke of a birthday card received from a young woman reciting their similarities, including a shared love of two-hour church. This card lifted his spirit, he said. He summarized that the members’ daily service efforts are immeasurable, but the church’s organizational contributions can be calculated. President Nelson then detailed the work of Latter-day Saint charities, detailing over $2 billion in aid to help people across the world. He explained that this aid is given regardless of religion, race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation or political persuasion. President Nelson then told the story of visiting a congregation in West Africa, where members had few material possessions but nevertheless provided a surplus of fast offerings to those in need elsewhere. He said he learned about the law and spirit of fasting from these members' generosity and obedience.

President Nelson explained that these efforts are the essence of ministering. Many world leaders have thanked him for the humanitarian aid from the church, and recognized the contributions of their Latter-day Saint citizens, he said.

Deceive Me Not

Elder Gary E. Stevenson, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said one day he came home from work to find white paint splashed all over the house. When he followed the trail, he found his 5-year-old son chasing the dog with a white paintbrush. When he asked his son what he was doing, the little boy said he just wanted the dog to look like one of the dogs in “101 Dalmatians.” Another time, when Elder Stevenson’s sons came back inside after playing in an area known for skunks, he asked them whether they had seen one. They said they hadn’t, but they had found a black kitty cat with a white stripe down its back. While both of these stories had minor consequences, they offer a powerful message to the rising generation of Satan’s methods to deceive them, Elder Stevenson explained.

“May we recognize Satan’s deceptions for what they are. May we withstand and see through the lies and influences of the one who seeks to destroy our souls and steal from us our present joy and future glory.” #ElderStevenson | #GeneralConference

The Savior’s Touch

Elder Walter F. González, General Authority Seventy, began his speech by recounting a scriptural story of the Savior healing a leper. He added that, like those who have leprosy, everyone has trials and may feel broken due to circumstances beyond their control.

“He knows what is best for us. Perhaps He will not remove our burdens right away. Sometimes He can make those burdens feel lighter, as He did with Alma and his people.”#ElderGonzález #GeneralConference

She was nervous and felt broken, but eventually felt peace come over her that she felt was from God, and felt an impression to submit to God's will. She later wrote of the experience that while waiting on the surgeon's table, she submitted to God's will and went into the surgery knowing she could trust God. God grants hope amid difficulties in every circumstance, Elder González said.

Your Great Adventure

The beloved fantasy novel “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien focuses on an unremarkable hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who goes on an adventure and overcomes a multitude of dangers to earn a great reward. Even though hobbits mainly like to eat, be jolly and enjoy the simple things in life, when Bilbo is presented with the prospect of an adventure, something touches his heart. Though he understands the journey will be dangerous, he decides to leave comfort behind because the adventure is well worth the risk. This story is God’s children’s too, said Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. They are called on a great adventure when they come to Earth, even though the adventure will be fraught with danger or trials. But they trust in God and the wonderful rewards they will receive.

There are three things he said God’s children must learn to do to be successful on their great adventure: 1) They must learn to incline their hearts to God and strive each day to find Him. This does not mean doing things perfectly, but trying to do their best. 2) They must learn to reach out in love to others. Faith, hope, love, compassion and service are the path, and refine disciples on their journey. 3) Lastly, Elder Uchtdorf said God’s children must learn to take upon themselves the name of Jesus Christ and not to be ashamed of it. Covenant Belonging

For those searching for less ephemeral and more meaningful purpose in life, making and keeping covenants with God can provide that connection to the divine, said Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, during the first session of Sunday general conference. Keeping covenants means keeping promises made to God and walking with Him in “covenant belonging,” Elder Gong said.

Following Christ and keeping covenants means “all things can work together for (our) good,” Elder Gong added, quoting the Doctrine and Covenants. Every good and promised blessing will come to those who remain faithful to the end, he added. The Book of Mormon is evidence of “covenant belonging” and provides assurance that Jesus Christ is the Savior, Elder Gong said. He added that restored priesthood authority gives the authority to seal “covenant relationships” in heaven, even after this life. Following God’s prophet is imperative to keeping covenants, Elder Gong said.

Spiritual treasures

President Russell M. Nelson capped off the general women’s session Saturday evening by sharing the love he feels for all the women of the church, adding an offer to be “an extra grandpa” to all of those in attendance. He then turned his attention toward the priesthood, saying the restoration of the priesthood, which is given to males of the church starting when they are 11 and 12, is equally available to women as it is to men. It’s not a process that is spelled out in a manual or church administrative function, but President Nelson said women endowed with God's power in the church can rely on revelation to learn how to use such power. President Nelson pointed out that women are allowed to perform priesthood ordinances in the church’s temples, and all callings in the church are given by priesthood authority, and thus women are given priesthood authority to operate in their callings.

“When you are set apart to serve in a calling under the direction of one who holds priesthood keys … you are given priesthood authority to function in that calling.” #PresNelson | #GeneralConference

President Nelson encouraged women to study sections 25, 84 and 107 of the church’s Doctrine and Covenants for more information on using that priesthood power. Learning to rely on God and his power will require women in the church to “shift away from worldly distractions,” and to “say no to some things” that may otherwise seem harmless. But doing so will also help women see positive changes in their spiritual strength, perspectives and feelings, President Nelson added. 8 New Temples Announced

President Russell M. Nelson announced plans for eight more temples around the world — including two in Utah. The spry 95-year-old worldwide church leader announced the church’s intention to build temples in Taylorsville and Orem, in addition to Freetown, Sierra Leone; Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea; Bentonville, Arkansas; Bacolod, Philippines; McAllen, Texas; and Coban, Guatemala.

Two Great Commandments

President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the church’s First Presidency, spoke on how church members can reach out with love to LGBTQ individuals. He referenced the first two commandments in Christianity: to love God and to love one's neighbor as oneself. But church members’ love for others should not supersede their love for God, he said. President Oaks said God’s laws are motivated by his love for His children, and emphasized God has not changed his definition of marriage or definition of the law of chastity.

Covenant women in partnership with God

President Henry B. Eyring of the church’s First Presidency followed up Sister Bonnie H. Cordon’s announcement of changes to the Young Women program by addressing the “covenant daughters of God” in the Conference Center and watching the broadcast around the world. Touching on covenants, promises, and the sacred power of womanhood, President Eyring told women of the church that their personal missions would offer them responsibilities as mothers, leaders and ministering sisters in the church, and that church programs are given to enhance their abilities to serve in that capacity. President Eyring quoted President Russell M. Nelson who said that helping other people reach their heavenly potential is part of the divine nature of women. Women, as mothers, teachers or nurturing saints, mold living clay to the shape of their hopes, President Nelson said.

Changes to Young Women program

Sister Bonnie H. Cordon, Young Women general president, outlined new changes to the Young Women’s program during Saturday’s general women’s session. Changes were made to four areas: the Young Women’s theme, flexibility for class sizes, retiring of Young Women class names, and the importance of class presidencies in their new classes.

Honoring His Name

The naming of a new child is a big responsibility for parents, said Sister Lisa L. Harkness, first counselor in the church’s Primary general presidency. Some parents name their child after family members, some name their baby a popular baby name. Names are also given to help children remember their ancestors and to do good works like them, she said. No matter where someone lives or what their age is, all share the special name of Jesus Christ, she said. Members of the church pledge their willingness to take on the name of Christ through the ordinance of baptism. The name given at birth reflects individual identity, Sister Harkness said, and those born again at baptism become the children of Christ. Last year, President Russell M. Nelson asked the women in the church to read the Book of Mormon and mark each verse that speaks of or refers to Christ. In remembering Christ, church members can see themselves as cherished children of God.

Aburto of the church’s Relief Society general presidency spoke on mental health, depression and suicide, opening up a conversation that remains personal to her following the death of her own father by suicide. Like any physical injury or trauma, the brain can succumb to mental health issues, Sister Aburto said. She pleaded with those in attendance to seek help and treatment for such detriments. “It is normal to feel sad or worried once in a while,” she said. “Sadness and anxiety are natural human emotions. However, if we are constantly sad … then we may be suffering from depression, anxiety or another emotional condition.”

Standing by Our Promises and Covenants

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke on the importance of making and keeping promises with God, or covenants, in Latter-day Saint lives. While bidding a fond farewell to the church’s association with the Boy Scouts of America, Elder Rasband further expanded on the “worldwide initiative focused on our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ” that is the church’s new youth programs for teenagers and children. The upcoming theme for youth is to “go and do,” describing a need to make and keep covenants, or promises, with God early and throughout church members’ lives. Those promises include adherence to the church’s “Word of Wisdom,” a code of health that prohibits the use of alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea and unprescribed drugs by members of the church. The apostle then shared a personal experience with his mother wherein he committed to follow the health code throughout his life. “Keeping promises is not a habit,” Elder Rasband said. “It is a characteristic of being a disciple of Jesus Christ.”

After the Trial of Our Faith

Elder Jorge M. Alvarado of the Quorum of the Seventy spoke of the blessings in store for faithful Latter-day Saints who follow the teachings of the Lord. He started by sharing a personal experience he had in his youth. A generous member of the church had offered to help his family fly from Puerto Rico to Salt Lake City, in order to be sealed in the temple. As soon as Elder Alvarado’s began preparing for the trip, an obstacle appeared — his sister became sick. His parents prayed on what they should do and they felt spiritually prompted to continue on the journey. Elder Alvarado said his parents felt their family would be blessed and watched over if they followed the Lord’s teachings to go to the temple — and they were, he said. His mother assured her children with faith, that they would be watched over by the Lord, Elder Alvarado said. Soon after, his sister recovered from her sickness. Often it is in times of trial and hardship when church members need the ordinances of the temple most, Elder Alvarado said. He also urged Latter-day Saint parents to teach their children to love the gospel and learn the “why” of Jesus Christ’s gospel — parents cannot expect children to learn these lessons on their own. He also spoke to parents with children who have left the church, and advised them to gently help their children comprehend the gospel’s truths. He said it was important to start now and reminded members it is never too late.

Consistent and Resilient Trust

Elder L. Todd Budge of the Seventy shared insights into how members of the church can be “consistently and resiliently happy,” despite life’s struggles and challenges. The “good news of the gospel” is not to eliminate sorrow or struggles from life, Elder Budge said — but to find happiness in life, despite afflictions, that can be “swallowed up in the joy of Christ.” “His gospel is a message of hope,” Elder Budge said. “Sorrow coupled with hope in Jesus Christ holds the promise of enduring joy.”

Come, Follow Me — the Lord’s Counterstrategy and Proactive Plan

Brother Mark L. Pace, the Sunday School general president, spoke about a recent experience he and his wife, Anne Marie, had while visiting the site of a temple under construction in Winnipeg, Canada. Building a temple in a cold place like Winnipeg requires a solid and firm foundation, Brother Pace pointed out. Similarly, Latter-day Saints need a solid and firm foundation built on the bedrock of their conversion to the Lord Jesus Christ. Thankfully, Brother Pace remarked, members live in a time when prophets and apostles teach of the Savior Jesus Christ. Listening and following their guidance helps individuals and families establish a firm foundation in Christ, he said. Starting in January, Latter-day Saints worldwide began studying the New Testament, with the Come, Follow Me resource that provides a weekly schedule to help individuals study the scriptures, the doctrine of the gospel, and the teachings of the prophets and apostles. Brother Pace shared a handful of remarks that different members of the church have shared with him, largely from families that said the resource has helped them grow closer to each other and learn more about the church. Brother Pace also noted that the “Come, Follow Me” resource is the Lord’s proactive plan to counter the attacks of the adversary.

Witnesses, Aaronic Priesthood Quorums, and Young Women Classes; President Russell M. Nelson announces changes to Latter-day Saint youth programs

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints President Russell M. Nelson discussed the recent policy change regarding who can witness Latter-day Saint baptisms and ordinances. He focused on the three main changes: A proxy baptism for a deceased person may be witnessed by anyone holding a current temple recommend, including a limited-use recommend. Any endowed member with a current temple recommend may serve as a witness to sealing ordinances, living and proxy. Any baptized member of the church may serve as a witness of the baptism of a living person. This change pertains to all baptisms outside the temple. He emphasized these policy adjustments are simply procedural and these changes should greatly enhance family participation in these ordinances. President Nelson then announced there will be changes to the organization of the Latter-day Saint youth. The adjustments are intended to help the youth develop their personal potential. Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles delivered further details regarding the changes for the Young Men organization, namely the disintegration of the Young Men presidency. Found Through the Power of the Book of Mormon

Elder Ruben V. Alliaud of the Quorum of the Seventy opened his remarks reminding members of the church that “in the end, nothing is truly lost” to God — including those who come to the church through missionary work. Elder Alliaud, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, also spoke of his own conversion through receiving a copy of the Book of Mormon from his uncle. His family was Catholic, he said, but the book had a significant impact on his life.

Just as Cheetahs Attack Prey, Satan will Attack the Righteous

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles was first to speak during Saturday afternoon’s general conference session. He shared a parable about attacking cheetahs to show how church members can protect themselves against Satan. Similar to President Boyd K. Packer’s noteworthy analogy of “spiritual crocodiles,” he shared with youth many decades ago, Elder Bednar shared an analogy of attacking cheetahs he and his wife saw while on a trip in Africa. Elder Bednar said they watched the cheetahs use a stealthy subtle strategy intended to distract their prey. He likened this strategy to what Satan uses to distract and tempt church members. “Each of us needs to be aware of beguiling bad that pretends to be good,” Elder Bednar warned listeners. He also advised Latter-day Saints to stay awake and alert and said spiritual complacency and casualness make individuals vulnerable to the adversary. Spiritually speaking, Latter-day Saints need to remain awake and alert to the promptings of the Holy Ghost, Elder Bednar said. Additionally, individuals must stay vigilant and keep watch to guard against Satan’s temptations, he said. It is also important to understand the intent of the enemy, he said. Satan is the enemy of righteousness, Elder Bednar reminded listeners. Like the cheetahs he and his wife watched attack its prey, Satan will try to lead church members astray, Elder Bednar said. “They were relentless in following their strategy of distraction and diversion,” Elder Bednar said of the cheetahs, noting Satan often works in similar ways.

Trust in the Lord

President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency, urged church members to trust the Lord, especially regarding questions about the spirit world, where the church teaches that people’s spirits go after mortal death and before resurrection. President Oaks asked members what they really know about the spirit world, then pointed out that the scriptures contain the basics, but not much else. He also taught that spirits continue to live in the spirit world after death, God’s and Jesus Christ’s work of salvation continues there, and some repentance is possible. President Oaks acknowledged that many people have reported visions of the spirit world, but he cautioned that these personalized experiences are not to be taught or understood as church doctrine. Additionally members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have previously taught that not every statement by a church leader should be considered doctrine, especially when spoken on a single occasion. Doctrine is taught by all members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and the First Presidency, he said. When looking for answers to questions about the spirit world, President Oaks suggested remembering that: 1. God loves His children and will do what is best for each of them. 2. The Bible teaches to “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” He asked church members not to teach things that are not church doctrine. Their duty is to teach church doctrine, keep God’s commandments, love and help others, and participate in church temples, he said.

Unwavering Commitment to Jesus Christ

Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke about keeping faith and a commitment to Jesus Christ, which isn’t always easy.

“It’d be nice if increased faith were transmitted like the flu or the common cold. Then, a simple ‘spiritual’ sneeze would build faith in others. But it doesn’t work that way. The only way faith grows is for an individual to act in faith.” #ElderRenlund | #GeneralConference

— GeneralConference (@ldsconf) October 5, 2019 He focused his message on the story of Brother Banza Mucioko, Sister Banza Régine, and Brother Mbuyi Nkitabungi, who lived in Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. All three were baptized into the church between the late 1970s and early 1980s, and, in 1986, they were signatories on a petition that appealed for the church to be officially recognized by their government. In addition, they remained faithful in the church, waiting 33 years after that before a temple was finally dedicated in their country. Elder Renlund cited their story as an example of unwavering faith.

Be intentional about creating time and space to hear God’s voice. She said distractions can occupy minds and hearts, making it more difficult to hear gentle promptings from the Holy Ghost. She encouraged church members to find a time and place each day to hear God’s voice. 2. Act without delay. The more you act, the more you will recognize the voice of God, Sister Craig said. Those who delay may forget the prompting or miss the chance to help someone for God. 3. Get your errand from the Lord. Ask God who you can help, and you will be on the Lord’s errand, she said. She urged church members to pray and ask the Lord for an errand. She used the example of her immigrant grandfather who was instrumental in bringing 50 families into church activity. 4. Believe and trust. Each person has unique missions and roles in life and will receive personalized guidance to complete them, she said.

The Joy of the Saints

How do we experience joy? Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said it’s possible for everyone to experience it. However, he said it’s those who follow the teachings of the Lord who will experience enduring joy.

Be Faithful, Not Faithless

Modern technology is a blessing but can distract us from our connection to heaven, Brother Stephen W. Owen, the Young Men general president said. He shared a story told by the late President Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve that described hungry deer that were fed hay, yet starved to death because the hay did not provide the nourishment they needed. He said spiritual nourishment comes when people deliberately take time each day to connect with heaven, despite the challenges they face.

True Disciples of the Savior

Elder Terence M. Vinson of the Presidency of the Seventy referenced his experiences growing up in Australia playing rugby and receiving injuries despite the efforts he gave to playing the sport, and then related this to the church’s teaching of eternal joy. “Giving it our all doesn’t mean that we will be continually enveloped in blessings or always have success,” he said. “But it does mean that we will have joy. Joy is not fleeting pleasure, or even temporary happiness. Joy is enduring, and is founded on our efforts being accepted by the Lord.”

The Message, the Meaning, and the Multitude

Elder Jeffery R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles used the New Testament account of a blind man who was healed to point out what he called the real meaning of general conference — making Jesus Christ the center of our lives. He told the story of a man in the book of Luke who was begging by the wayside when Jesus Christ passed by. Because of his persistence and determined faith, and despite a crowd that wanted to silence him, he was taken to Christ, who healed him. Elder Holland said the significance of the story is that the crowd had the vision to identify Christ as the meaning of the clamor. In matters of faith and conviction, church members should direct their questions to those who have faith, Elder Holland said.
