SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man serving prison time after posting a Facebook message threatening to kill "as many girls as I see" says he was extremely lonely. The Deseret News reports that a recording of a parole hearing Tuesday reveals Christopher W. Cleary said he made the post on a train ride after going to a Utah Jazz basketball game and feeling sad seeing so many people on dates and with their families. It was Cleary's first parole hearing since he was sentenced in May.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Some Democrats who managed to get elected to Congress from Trump country are finding themselves in a tight spot as the House launches an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. At least six Democrats say they are opposed to the move or undecided. Among them is Rep. Kendra Horn of Oklahoma. Trump won her district in 2016 by nearly 14 points.
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — Heavy-lift helicopters are being used to drop water on a wildfire burning in a remote area of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and an adjacent national forest. Officials say the fire started July 25 by lightning has become more active recently due to high winds and that crews are trying to stop it from growing northward as winds pick up again this weekend.
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — An environmental group is seeking to limit the scope of a federal court order that banned tree cutting across national forests in New Mexico and one in Arizona. A U.S. District Court judge in Arizona earlier this month sidelined timber management projects on the forests until federal agencies can get a better handle on the population of the threatened Mexican spotted owl. WildEarth Guardians has asked the judge to exclude firewood cutting for personal use from the ban.
