BUS CRASHES CARRYING COUNTRY SINGER JOSH TURNER'S ROAD CREW

SHANDON, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in central California say a passenger bus has crashed while carrying the road crew for country and gospel singer Josh Turner, leaving one dead and seven injured.

Turner and his band were not on the bus.

Two of the passengers are said to have sustained major injuries and five had moderate injuries.

The bus was traveling eastbound on Highway 46 in San Luis Obispo County when it crashed in Shandon late Wednesday night.

The trip followed a Turner concert at the Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles, according to media reports.

FORMER 'AMERICAN GANGSTER' PROSECUTOR SENTENCED TO PROBATION

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) — A former New Jersey prosecutor portrayed by actor Russell Crowe in the film "American Gangster" has been sentenced to five years of probation after pleading guilty to stealing from his law clients.

Richard Roberts was sentenced Thursday in Morristown, New Jersey.

Roberts' involvement in prosecuting Harlem drug kingpin Frank Lucas in the 1970s was portrayed in the 2007 film also starring Denzel Washington. Lucas died in May.

Roberts had been on trial in July when he pleaded guilty to perjury and theft charges. He acknowledged having taken $20,000 in client funds from his law firm's attorney trust account to make alimony payments.

It wasn't the first time Roberts ran afoul of the law. He was sentenced to three years of probation in 2018 after pleading guilty to federal tax charges.

BENEFIT CONCERT TO FEATURE "SUPERGIRL" CO-STARS, NEWLYWEDS

NEW YORK (AP) — "Supergirl" co-stars and real-life newlyweds Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood will join performers Jane Lynch, Wayne Brady and Laurie Metcalf for a concert being livestreamed Saturday to benefit low-income migrants.

The show will also feature Marcia Cross, Grant Gustin, Cheyenne Jackson, Rachel Bay Jones, Melissa Manchester, Eric McCormack, Caroline Rhea, Gina Torres, Liz Callaway, Yuri Sardarov and "Dancing with the Stars" dancers Pasha Pashkov and Daniella Karagach.

The concert is set for 9 p.m. EDT at UCLA's Royce Hall. It will be broadcast via Facebook Live and at ConcertsforAmerica.com. Proceeds will benefit the National Immigration Law Center.

It's the latest in a series of benefits created and hosted by Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley, the host and producer of Sirius XM's "On Broadway" show.

DREAMWORKS, SHANGHAI STUDIO HOPE 'ABOMINABLE' SUITS CHINA

UNDATED (AP) _ DreamWorks Animation and Shanghai-based Pearl Studio are doing everything they can to ensure their first joint production wins over moviegoers in China.

Director Jill Culton says DreamWorks animators working on "Abominable" spent nights and weekends removing metal trash cans from the background after their Chinese collaborators told them that detail wouldn't be true-to-life.

"Abominable" centers on the bond between a teenage girl and a Yeti from the Himalayas.

It's been 20 years since a Hollywood animated film featuring a Chinese heroine opened in China. Disney's "Mulan" did not fare well. Chinese audiences found the American adaptation of a centuries-old story from their culture unrelatable.

"Abominable" opens in the U.S. on Sept. 27 and in China on Oct. 1.

FOLAKE OLOWOFOYEKU HEARTS LIFE IN THE TELEVISION COMEDY LANE

NEW YORK (AP) — Folake Olowofoyeku (foh-LAH’-kay oh-LOW’-oh-woo-foy-eh-koo) became an actress against the wishes of her parents, who wanted her to have a career in law.

Her Nigerian parents were so hell-bent on launching her into the family profession that they named her after the first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria. It's a title conferred on legal practitioners who have distinguished themselves.

But she majored in theater and headed into the business after earning her degree.

A similar scenario is present for Olowofoyeku in "Bob Hearts Abishola," her CBS comedy premiering Monday.

Olowofoyeku plays Abishola. The cardiac nurse is determined that her young son, Dele, makes it into Harvard and becomes a doctor. Olowofoyeku says Abishola "has a specific dream for her child born out of love and protection."

Billy Gardell co-stars in the comedy.

POLAND'S TOP FILMMAKERS PROTEST FESTIVAL ADMISSION RULES

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's top filmmakers are demanding artistic independence for the nation's prestigious film festival after a politically charged movie was withdrawn.

The filmmakers guild wants the selection procedure for the Polish Film Festival to be independent from its organizers, which include the Culture Ministry.

The appeal came late Wednesday, after the last-minute withdrawal of a movie inspired by a pyramid scheme that was revealed in 2012, when the current government's opponents were in power.

The "Solid Gold" movie was generally believed to be harmful to the opposition ahead of Oct. 13 elections, but its producers had it withdrawn after its director refused to re-edit it. Government-controlled television TVP is among its producers.

Oscar-winning Pawel Pawlikowski and other filmmakers demanded that the selection of movies for the festival be independent of the organizing body.

'NO PATH IS EASY': BLACK OPERA SINGERS DETAIL STRUGGLES

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 60 years after Marian Anderson broke the color barrier at the Metropolitan Opera, black singers still face unique obstacles in building their careers within the industry.

Naomi Andre wrote the book titled "Black Opera." She says black singers are not getting the calls from the big opera houses that probably should be coming their way.

The Met says this season there are 36 black singers on the roster, out of a total of 368. Twenty-seven of those are in the new production of the Gershwins' "Porgy and Bess" that opens Monday.
