MOAB — Two people have died after a plane that left Moab on Sunday morning did not return, authorities say.

The plane took off from Moab about 8 a.m. Sunday and was due back by noon, according to a Facebook post from Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

Moab resident Kevin Carroll, 53, and Lindon resident Jay Camberlango, 42, were inside the plane, according to Grand County Sheriff’s Lt. Kim Neal. He was not sure what type of plane they were in, but said Carroll was the owner of the aircraft.

San Juan County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Allen Freestone confirmed to KSL TV that the two occupants of the plane died at the crash scene. The plane was located near the Canyonlands Overlook area in San Juan County, he said.

About 7:55 a.m., searchers located an aircraft in San Juan County that matches the description of the one that was reported missing, according to an updated Facebook post. About 9:20 a.m., crews confirmed it was the aircraft that had been missing, according to the post.

The sheriff’s office was notified that the plane was missing about 4:40 p.m. Sunday and a search took place that afternoon, according to the Facebook post.

Volunteers in private planes helped search for the plane on Sunday afternoon until dark, according to the post. A state Department of Public Safety helicopter continued searching through the night and into Monday morning, the post said.

All volunteer pilots and planes who were participating in the search are asked to cease operations, according to the Grand County Sheriff's Office.
