WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump's Oval Office address Tuesday night cast the southern border as in crisis and blamed Democrats for failing to provide money for his border wall and partially closing the government. He suggested that building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico would be an act of "love" because walls protect the people inside them. He also cited slayings and other crimes committed by people in the U.S. illegally as a reason lawmakers should approved border wall funding.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top congressional Democrats say President Donald Trump "has chosen fear" in his drive to build a southern border wall and are calling on him to reopen the government shuttered because of the standoff over his demand for money for the barrier. Speaking moments after Trump made his case for the wall in an Oval Office address, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told a national television audience that the president's rhetoric has been "full of misinformation and even malice."

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Communities along the U.S.-Mexico border are struggling to take care of migrant families seeking asylum. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been releasing families into the U.S. without even initial screenings by asylum officers. And while migrants are being given court dates, they are not being returned to Mexico, because the two countries haven't yet worked out the mechanics. The San Diego Rapid Response Network has served more than 4,000 people since opening its shelter in October.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Prosecutors with special counsel Robert Mueller's office have accused Trump's chief campaign aide of sharing election-related information with his Russian contacts. In a court filing, they allege former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort shared polling data with a business associate accused of having ties to Russian intelligence. The accusation could be important evidence in Mueller's ongoing probe into potential coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

SYDNEY (AP) — Several foreign consulates have been evacuated in Melbourne as Australian officials note they are responding to multiple "hazardous material" events in the city. The Australian Federal Police say that police and emergency services are examining suspicious packages delivered to the foreign consulates. The statement Wednesday said: "The circumstances surrounding these incidents are being investigated."
