FARMINGTON — The Utah State Amateur moved to match play Wednesday, and the 64-man bracket already has a significant upset.

Cole Ponich, the Davis High golfer who won the state's junior amateur last week, was seeded second after the two-day stroke play tournament.

Davis' Jack Sargent edged his teammate 2 and 1 less than 24 hours after surviving a playoff to clinch a berth in Wednesday's round of 64 at Oakridge Country Club.

Sargent fired four birdies on the back nine, clinching the round with a par putt on the 17th hole at Oakridge.

Sargent will face Utah State's Andy Hess in Thursday’s round of 32, which will kick off two rounds played on the day to narrow the field to the final eight golfers.

Other notable golfers to advance to the round of 32 include previous champions Darrin Overson and Dan Horner, as well as BYU's Kelton Hirsch, who will face UVU golfer Aaron Yeates on Thursday morning.

You can follow each result via the Utah Golf Association's live bracket.
