The Great Salt Lake

It was one of those "why hasn't this happened until now?" events.

We speak of Governor Jon Huntsman's recent executive order creating the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council. The council's charge: "Develop a vision for the future of the Great Salt Lake." The 12 member panel is to submit their initial recommendations to the governor by the end of the year.

There is definite need for a reasoned and coordinated approach to managing this long neglected, yet wondrous and magnificent natural resource.

The lake, of course, has its champions, especially those who study and understand its fragile and vital ecosystem. Some sail its waters, camp on its shores, or mine its resources. Many others, however, merely tolerate the lake's proximity to their lives and complain when it smells.

It won't be easy for the diverse panel to agree on recommendations. Some will encourage conservation and preservation, while other panel members will favor development and recreation. At least the various interests are at the table with the governor's challenge before them.

KSL sees the effort as timely and vital, especially with the population growth that is exploding along the lake's shores. We look forward to seeing the course the panel charts "for how to best utilize all features of the lake."
