SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — From the Upper Peninsula to Detroit, seven new charter schools are opening in Michigan.
The Detroit News (http://detne.ws/2bwiQh4 ) reports that the number of charter schools statewide will remain around 300 due to closings and a merger.
The Michigan Association of Public School Academies says only two new charters are in southeastern Michigan, including one in Detroit. The group's president, Dan Quisenberry, says there apparently wasn't much need in the Detroit area.
Charters compete with traditional public schools for students and state aid.
The new schools are Lake Superior Academy in Sault Ste. Marie; Gateway to Success Academy in Scottville; Livingston Classical Academy in Whitmore Lake; PACE-The Paris Academy in Genesee County; Highpoint Virtual Academy of Michigan in Mesick; Detroit Prep in Detroit; and Inkster Preparatory Academy in Inkster.
