Brazilian official: Lochte made it up...Disaster aid on fast track...Call him 'Mr. Brexit'

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A Brazilian police official says U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte (LAHK'-tee) made up the story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro. The official says what actually happened is that Lochte and three fellow swimmers stopped at a gas station in a Rio suburb Sunday morning, and broke the door to an outside bathroom while trying to push it open. A security guard then confronted them. He was armed with a pistol, but never drew it. According to the official, the gas station manager then arrived and asked the swimmers to pay for the broken door. They gave him some money and then left. The official says two of the swimmers, who were pulled off a plane yesterday before they could leave for the United States, told police that the robbery story was false.

DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (AP) — Federal officials plan to speed federal disaster assistance to flood-stricken Louisiana. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro said in a news release today that his agency will provide support to homeowners and low-income renters displaced by severe storms and flooding. The flooding that struck the Baton Rouge and Lafayette areas has left at least 13 people dead and damaged an estimated 40,000 homes.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters battling a 49-square-mile wildfire in the mountains and desert of Southern California face another day of hot and dry weather with gusty southwest winds. The National Weather Service says red flag warnings for dangerous fire conditions will remain in effect through this evening. Firefighters continue to try to defend communities including Wrightwood and Lytle Creek in the rugged San Gabriel Mountains.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former NFL star Darren Sharper has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for drugging and raping women. Before he was sentenced, Sharper and one of the women made emotional statements in federal court in New Orleans. Sharper said he had lived "right" for 38 years -- before he "took this path." The woman said Sharper was so arrogant and "twisted" that he kept attacking women even after he knew that he was being investigated.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is predicting that he'll soon be known as "Mr. Brexit." He offered no further explanation in the tweet, which has been widely discussed -- and mocked -- on social media. But he appeared to be referring to comments he made yesterday on Fox News while discussing what he called the "movement" fueling his campaign. Trump supported Britain's exit from the European Union, and has said voters there were "taking the country back."
