Maya DiRado of the United States prevailed in the women's 200-meter backstroke, edging out Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. And in a stunner, Joseph Schooling of Singapore held off Michael Phelps to win the 100-meter butterfly.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton has defended his wife, Hillary, during a Las Vegas forum, saying the controversy over her personal email server shouldn't be a cause for distrust. Clinton acknowledged it was a mistake for his wife to maintain a personal server, even though her predecessors and successor at the State Department did it.

ALTOONA, Pa. (AP) — Donald Trump has offered effusive praise for Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus. Trump told rally-goers in Altoona, Pennsylvania, that Priebus is doing a great job. Priebus is joining Trump this week as he campaigns. They're working to dispel speculation that the GOP may abandon Trump.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Parts of the central Gulf Coast were inundated with rain today, and more may be on the way. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency as rescue workers in the southeastern part of the state braced for more precipitation through the weekend. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said one man died after slipping into a flooded ditch.

HELOTES, Texas (AP) — A 7-month-old boy died today after being left all day in a hot sport utility vehicle in a San Antonio-area Wal-Mart parking lot. The child's father is employed at the store in Helotes, and told officers that he forgot to drop the child off at day care before going to work this morning. No charges have been filed.
