RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — An American has won the first gold medal of the Rio Olympics. Virginia Thrasher won the women's 10-meter air rifle today, beating a two-time gold medalist from China. The 19-year-old from West Virginia was the first freshman to win both individual NCAA rifle titles, and helped West Virginia win the team title. She followed that by winning the U.S. Olympic Trials less than a month later, earning a trip to Rio.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Witnesses say a man was shot dead near the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro after last night's Olympic opening ceremony. Associated Press photographers heard loud gunshots, forcing games volunteers and others leaving the ceremony to duck for cover behind cars. A shooter was seen running from the scene and fleeing in a car. After police and medics arrived on the scene, paramedics were seen treating the victim.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani officials say a blacklisted American citizen has been arrested in the capital. The Interior Ministry says Federal Investigation Agency officials arrested Mathew Craig Barrett at an Islamabad guest house. A ministry spokesman says Barrett was deported and blacklisted in 2011 after being found in the area of a sensitive installation. The interior minister has ordered an inquiry into how Barrett managed to enter Pakistan again and suspended the airport immigration staff.

DETROIT (AP) — Authorities in Detroit say a man who was arrested after buying five grenades from an undercover federal agent also had guns, ammunition and CDs marked with the name of a slain radical cleric in his home. The Detroit News obtained a sealed search warrant that details the items taken from Sebastian Gregerson's home. The 29-year-old has been charged with possessing an unregistered destructive device. Court records say Gregerson spoke about carrying out an unspecified attack.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans jazz clarinetist Pete Fountain has died. His son-in-law and manager says the 86-year-old was in hospice care in New Orleans when he died early today of heart failure. Fountain started playing professionally on Bourbon Street in his teens, and in his early years toured nationally with the Dukes of Dixieland and the late trumpeter Al Hirt. Real fame came in 1957 when he joined "The Lawrence Welk Show" as a headliner. His recording of "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" sold more than a half million copies in 1959.
