CHICAGO (AP) — Efforts by Republican lawmakers to restrict voting in three states have been dealt legal setbacks today. A federal appeals court ruled today that a North Carolina law requiring photo identification targeted blacks. A Kansas law that would have applied strict citizenship requirements was halted. So was a Wisconsin law that placed limits including the times when absentee voting is allowed.
CINCINNATI (AP) — A change-of-plea hearing is scheduled for a man accused of plotting to attack the U.S. Capitol in support of the Islamic State group. A hearing for 22-year-old Christopher Lee Cornell has been set for Monday in federal court in Cincinnati. Cornell faces four charges, including attempted murder of U.S. officials and employees. He has been held without bond since his January 2015 arrest.
NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — The new Sandy Hook Elementary School built to replace the one where 20 students and six educators were gunned down in 2012 has opened. The old school was demolished. The new school is on the same property but not the same footprint. It features three courtyards, study spaces designed to look like treehouses and a moat-like raingarden.
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say three Florida Wal-Mart employees have been charged in the death of a suspected shoplifter. An autopsy shows the 64-year-old died of mechanical asphyxiation and had multiple broken ribs. The workers, at a store in Lakeland, have been suspended and their employment is under review.
