SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State officials are reopening Utah Lake for boating now that a huge algae bloom appears to be decreasing, but they are still warning people not to swim or come into contact with the water. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality said in a statement Thursday that new samples indicate that the harmful bacteria commonly known as blue-green algae is dissipating at most locations.
BLANDING, Utah (AP) — Hundreds of people who oppose the proposed Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah showed up at Senate field hearing in Blanding on the polarizing topic. Gov. Gary Herbert called the proposal a "political tomahawk" and said a better solution is legislation from U.S. Reps. Rob Bishop and Jason Chaffetz that would have Congress designate 1.4 million acres around Bears Ears as a conservation area.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Chinese rocket body streaking across the night sky over the Western United States lit up social media as people shared photos and video of the bright object. U.S. Strategic Command spokeswoman Julie Ziegenhorn says a Chinese CZ-7 rocket re-entered the atmosphere Wednesday night. Photographer Ian Norman was near the eastern Sierra Nevada and filmed it in the dark sky, saying, "It was really strange to see something that bright."
UNDATED (AP) — The only female delegate to the Navajo Nation Council says she's been subject to sexist comments in that role and little is being done to change a culture of sexual harassment at the top level of tribal government. Amber Kanazbah Crotty _ one of 23 council delegates _ also said she was groped several years ago. The federal Department of Justice says women in Indian Country are sexually abused at more than twice the rate of other women in the U.S.
