PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Twelve years after he gained national recognition with his very first Democratic Convention speech in Boston, President Barack Obama has called on Americans to pass the baton to Hillary Clinton. Obama, speaking to delegates at this year's convention in Philadelphia, said voters should reject what he called the "deeply pessimistic vision" of Republican Donald Trump.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — In a speech that included phrases in Spanish and an impersonation of Donald Trump saying "believe me," Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine has accepted the Democratic vice-presidential nomination. Kaine ridiculed a list of promises and assertions by Trump, including the GOP nominee's refusal to release his income tax returns. Hillary Clinton will accept her nomination on Thursday night.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island congressman says the decades-old tradition of giving intelligence briefings to presidential candidates shouldn't apply to Donald Trump. Rhode Island Rep. David Cicilline (sihs-ihl-EE'-nee) says that's because of Trump's call for "hostile foreign action" goes beyond partisan politics and "represents a threat to the republic itself." During a Wednesday news conference, Trump called on Russia to find emails deleted by Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police in Los Angeles say a car smashed into a house while a Bible study was underway, killing one person and injuring eight others. The car was almost entirely inside when it stopped. Police say the driver ran from the scene and police are looking for her.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — It's strong enough to sedate elephants and to be deadly when mixed with or passed off as heroin. Authorities in several states say a drug called carfentanil (kahr-FEHN'-tuh-nihl) is 100 times as potent as the fentanyl (FEHN'-tuh-nihl) already boosting heroin troubles. Investigators are still trying to track down the source.
