Shooter obsessed with mass shootings...Islamic State claims attack in Kabul...Funeral for slain officer

MUNICH (AP) — Police say there's no evidence of terror connections with the 18-year-old who opened fire at a crowded Munich shopping mall and fast-food restaurant, killing nine people and wounding 16 others. But they say the gunman who later killed himself was obsessed with mass shootings. It also appeared the shooter hacked a Facebook account, inviting people to come to the mall for a free giveaway.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Islamic State group is claiming responsibility for a deadly bombing in the Afghan capital targeting a predominantly Shiite ethnic minority. A statement reported by an Islamic State-linked online news agency says two militants detonated explosive vests amid a crowd of demonstrators today in Kabul. The Afghan health ministry says at least 31 people were killed.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Another funeral is scheduled today for one of the three law enforcement officers shot and killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Brad Garafola (gar-ah-FOH'-lah), a 45-year-old East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputy, is described by friends as a man committed to public service and devoted to his family. His funeral comes a day after hundreds of people turned out for Baton Rouge police Officer Matthew Gerald.

WASHINGTON (AP) — One Hillary Clinton superdelegate says that while Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine may seem like a "conventional choice," for a running mate, he will balance the ticket well for the general election. Kaine is getting mostly positive reviews as Clinton's choice but it's done little to soothe disenchanted Bernie Sanders supporters. Clinton and Kaine campaign together today in Florida.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The weekend isn't expected to bring much relief from a widespread heat wave. By yesterday afternoon, all but one of the Lower 48 states had hit 90 degrees somewhere, with only Washington around for cooler comfort. And the outlook for August, September and October is for above-normal temperatures everywhere.
