Obama urges cooler words...Baton Rouge investigation...Death toll in Turkish coup attempt nears 300

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is urging Americans to resist inflammatory words and actions following the killing of three police officers this morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Obama says while the shooter's motive is still unknown, the nation needs to know "loud and clear that nothing justifies attacks on law enforcement." The attack followed police shootings of two black men, Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge and Philando Castile in suburban St. Paul, Minnesota, earlier this month.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Investigators are trying to learn more about the man who shot six police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, this morning, killing three of them and leaving a fourth in critical condition. The gunman was killed at the scene. A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation says the shooter was identified as Gavin Long. In Kansas City, police converged on a house that was listed for a Gavin Long, some with weapons drawn.

ISTANBUL (AP) — The death toll from the failed coup attempt in Turkey has risen to nearly 300. Meanwhile, more people have been rounded up as Turkish officials investigate who was behind it. The state-run Anadolu news agency says 149 police personnel have been detained in the capital, Ankara, while 70 generals and admirals also have been detained. Of the generals and admirals brought before court, 11 have been put under arrest, while the others are awaiting processing.

NICE, France (AP) — The imam of the main mosque in the French city of Nice says many victims of last week's Bastille Day truck attack were themselves Muslim. Mahmoud Benzamia has been consoling and praying with victim's relatives at Nice's Pasteur Hospital. He tells AP Television that the Tunisian-born truck driver responsible for the attack was a "madman" and relatives say he was not a devout, practicing Muslim.

NEW YORK (AP) — "The Secret Life of Pets" remains the top movie at the box office, bringing in more than $50 million in its second week. The new "Ghostbusters" finished a strong second in its debut weekend, earning an estimated $46 million in North American theaters.
