NICE, France (AP) — France's justice minister says that the man who drove a truck through crowds at Bastille Day celebrations in Nice (nees), killing at least 84 people, had a record of petty crime but nothing matching the seriousness of last night's rampage. The Tunisian man, Mohamed Bouhlel (boo-LEL'), was stopped and killed in a hail of police bullets. Video shot by witnesses shows the truck coming under police gunfire as it drives along a pedestrian walkway during a Bastille Day celebration.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is set to make his first public appearance with his chosen running mate — Indiana Gov. Mike Pence — tomorrow morning in New York. The official announcement that Pence is the vice presidential pick is set for the same Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan where Trump had been scheduled to reveal his choice today. Trump postponed the announcement following the truck attack in Nice, France, that left scores dead.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican Party is already working to raise money right off Donald Trump's decision to name Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate. Trump says in a fundraising email sent shortly after he tweeted his choice that supporters should "contribute now to be the first to join the Trump-Pence Team." Pence's selection is aimed in part at assuring donors that Trump is prepared to run a more serious and disciplined general election campaign.

CHICAGO (AP) — An analysis of data from the agency that investigates Chicago police misconduct shows it rarely recommends punishment and that the Chicago Police Board often doesn't follow its recommendation to fire officers. The Chicago Tribune's investigation found that the Independent Police Review Authority recommended punishment in less than 4 percent of cases. Of 43 cases where firing was recommended, the police board agreed in 20 cases. Mayor Rahm Emanuel has pledged to replace the agency with a more aggressive body.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady will drop his appeal and serve his four-game suspension for the "Deflategate" scandal. The New England Patriots quarterback said in a Facebook post that he's made the "difficult decision to no longer proceed with the legal process." Brady's latest appeal was rejected Wednesday by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He would have had to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to take his case, and only about 1 percent of the appeals submitted to the nation's highest court are accepted.
