WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has been trying today to assure Republicans in Congress that they all share the same goals. But some who have been wary of Trump's incendiary comments and his campaign style say they remain unconvinced. Trump told one critic -- Republican Sen. Ben Sasse (sas) of Nebraska -- "Surely, you don't want Clinton." A Sasse spokesman says the senator considers the two presidential choices to be a "Dumpster fire" -- and that "nothing has changed."
WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director James Comey is strongly defending the government's decision not to prosecutor Hillary Clinton over her private email setup. During four hours of questioning by a House panel, Comey said there was no evidence that she knew that anything she was doing was against the law -- and no evidence that she had lied to federal investigators. But a number of Republicans suggested there was a double standard for charging everyday people accused of crimes as opposed to high-level people like Clinton.
WASHINGTON (AP) — An independent study finds that Donald Trump's health care plan would make 18 million people uninsured. But the study also says the Trump plan would lower premiums significantly for policies purchased directly by consumers. Trump's plan would have little effect on people covered by employers and those on Medicare. But millions of low-income adults who are covered by the Medicaid expansion under President Barack Obama's health care law would lose some newly-gained benefits.
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) — President Barack Obama says all Americans should be "deeply troubled" by the fatal shootings of two black men -- one in Minnesota, and one in Louisiana -- by police in the past couple of days. In the Louisiana case, the federal Justice Department is conducting a civil rights investigation into the fatal shooting of a black man by two white police officers. In Minnesota, the governor is also calling for a federal investigation.
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — A newspaper carrier is dead, and four other people have been wounded after a man opened fire on cars traveling along a parkway in East Tennessee early this morning. A police officer responding to the shooting was among those wounded, as was the suspect after officers returned fire.
