BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) — A Maine school that has held Civil War reenactments for as long as it has existed will host its final Pickett's Charge.
Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School in Brunswick is changing curriculum to steer away from the Civil War, resulting in the change.
The tradition began 20 years ago at the now-closed Jordan Acres school and moved to Stowe when the school opened in 2011. The Times Record (http://bit.ly/2569n5o ) reports Stowe's final Civil War reenactment will take place on May 27.
Fifth-grade teacher Lou Sullivan says the tradition began with kids carrying broomsticks and wearing whatever blue or gray clothes they could find. They then participated in a reenactment of Pickett's Charge. There was also a picnic.
Sullivan says the curriculum's focus is changing to the American Revolution.
