Organizers canceled, fearing possible violence. Police reported the arrests during some isolated confrontations after the cancellation.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — While some workers never look forward to Monday, at least New Jersey commuters can take solace that their trip in will be pretty much business as usual thanks to a tentative deal reached with rail workers. The deal averts a strike and Gov. Chris Christie says commuters won't have to worry about fare hikes for a while either.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — President Barack Obama says the "dangers are real" and that's why he thinks authorities must be able to access data held on electronic devices. Obama, appearing at an annual tech festival in the Texas capital, was asked his take in the debate pitting encryption and personal privacy against national security. Apple is challenging the government's request that it help the FBI access data on a cellphone that was used in the San Bernardino attack that killed 14 people.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — One inmate is still at large after he and another man escaped from a New Mexico prisoner transport van. Police say a convicted murder who and eluded authorities for nearly two days has been recaptured. Joseph Cruz was taken into custody in Albuquerque after a brief foot chase. Police are still searching for Lionel Clah, a 29-year-old convicted of armed robbery and for shooting at a police officer in northern New Mexico.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say keyboardist Keith Emerson may have killed himself. Police say the co-founder of the seminal progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer, had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His longtime girlfriend found him at their Santa Monica, California, condominium Friday morning. He was 71.
