Water still rising in parts of Midwest...Extra police on guard in Munich...Elevator kills man in NYC

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Homes in rural southern Missouri and Illinois are increasingly threatened by swollen rivers as levees crumble and the water keeps rising. Two more levees succumbed yesterday, bringing the number of levee failures to at least 11. Back upstream near St. Louis, water from the Mississippi, Meremec and Missouri rivers was largely receding and two major highways have reopened as residents assess the damage and clean up.

BERLIN (AP) — The streets of Munich still have about 200 additional police keeping an eye on things in the wake of credible warnings of a planned attack on New Year's Eve. No such attack took place but two Munich train stations were evacuated for a time late Thursday.

NEW YORK (AP) — In New York City, a falling elevator trapped and crushed a man to death on New Year's Eve. Witnesses tell the New York Daily News the man had helped a woman to safety before losing his own life. The city Buildings Department is investigating the accident.

LONDON (AP) — The head of an official British investigation says there are "lots of significant cases" to discuss involving alleged abuses during the Iraq war. Mark Warwick says part of the discussion is whether any meet the war crimes threshold. British forces withdrew from Iraq in 2009. Lawyers are still referring cases to the British government-established criminal probe into murder, abuse and torture claims. U.K. soldiers may eventually face prosecution.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Natalie Cole, the daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole, has died. She was 65. Cole carved out her own Grammy-winning success with R&B hits like "Our Love" and "This Will Be" before triumphantly intertwining her and her father's legacies to make his "Unforgettable" their signature hit through technological wizardry. Her family says she died of complications from ongoing health issues.
