Natalie Cole remembered... Alan Alda praises Wayne Rogers... India firefight

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tributes have been pouring in for singer Natalie Cole, who died on New Year's Eve at age 65. Tony Bennett says Cole was "an exceptional jazz singer" who "will be greatly missed.' Patti LaBelle tweeted, "She will be truly missed but her light will shine forever!" Cole died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles due to complications from ongoing health issues.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Alan Alda calls fellow performer Wayne Rogers "smart and funny and curious and dedicated." Alda praised his former "M.A.S.H." co-star a day after Rogers died on New Year's Eve of complications from pneumonia at age 82. Alda says he and Rogers were "close friends" and that he'll "miss him very much."

NEW DELHI (AP) — Officials say at least four gunmen attacked an Indian air force base near the border with Pakistan. Two of the gunmen were killed as they exchanged fire with security forces. An official says security forces were exchanging fire with the other two. Saturday's attack comes just a week after India's prime minister made an unannounced visit to Pakistan to meet its leader.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan's Emperor Akihito has expressed his hopes for world peace as he appeared with his wife, Empress Michiko, and other family members before thousands of well-wishers waving flags. Akihito read a New Year's statement in which he expressed sympathy for people displaced from their homes after the March 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster in northeastern Japan.

ROWLAND HEIGHTS, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles County authorities say a man shot and killed his wife and two others in his home on New Year's Eve before his son wrestled the gun away and fatally shot him. The chain of events in Rowland Heights was apparently set off by a dispute over a washing machine. The son is being held on suspicion of murder.
