LAS VEGAS (AP) — A lawyer representing a woman accused of plowing her car through crowds of pedestrians on the Las Vegas Strip says it's too soon to say if her mental condition will become part of her defense. Lakeisha Holloway is due in court tomorrow to face charges of murder, felony hit-and-run, and child abuse and neglect. She's been denied bail and is on suicide watch.
FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl must decide if he wants to face a court-martial before a jury or a judge when he's tried by the military on charges related to his 2009 disappearance from a base in Afghanistan. He was held for five years by the Taliban. Bergdahl entered no pleas during a brief court appearance today at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
HONOLULU (AP) — President Barack Obama is marking five years since he signed legislation repealing the ban on gays serving openly in the military. In a Facebook post, Obama says his greatest responsibility as commander in chief is to keep Americans safe. And he says the national defense requires the talents of every American, regardless of sexual orientation.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman who refused to leave a hospital after doctors discharged her died after she was forcibly removed by police in Blountstown. The NAACP and a Tallahassee attorney say 57-year-old Barbara Dawson collapsed yesterday while being escorted in handcuffs from the Liberty Calhoun Hospital, where she went to seek treatment for breathing difficulties.
BANGOR, Maine (AP) — A high school in Maine has reversed its decision to prevent a math teacher from keeping a pink Hello Kitty Christmas tree in her classroom. School officials initially said the tree needed to have an educational component in order to stay. But a TV station (WABI) quotes the principal as saying the school is now satisfied that the tree highlights the "universal nature of holiday celebration."
