LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — Lake Tahoe is among hundreds of lakes worldwide that researchers say are warming due to climate change. A study funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation found that lakes are warming an average of 0.61 degree each decade. Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada line had an increase above the average — 0.97 degree when measured by hand and 1.28 degrees measured by satellite.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Under pressure from federal regulators, Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air is increasing training for pilots and dispatchers after a plane landed low on fuel this summer. In July, a plane operated by two Allegiant executives who are also pilots made an emergency landing at a closed airport in Fargo, North Dakota, after one of the pilots told controllers he didn't have enough fuel to reach another airport. Allegiant says it has added new procedures and training.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The company that sold the Las Vegas Review-Journal to billionaire casino mogul and GOP mega donor Sheldon Adelson is defending the transaction. Mike Reed is chief executive officer of New Media Investment Group's subsidiary company Gatehouse Media, which will continue to run Nevada's largest newspaper. He said Gatehouse didn't disclose the buyer due to a confidentiality agreement and rejected the notion that the paper's integrity had been challenged.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid says his party has tried everything to get gun control legislation through Congress and still keeps losing to the National Rifle Association. The Nevada Democrat suggests that maybe Democrats themselves are to blame for the failures — or maybe the American people are "gullible," even after multiple mass shootings. The comments from Reid in an interview with The Associated Press reflect deep frustrations in his conference.
