WELLINGTON, Fla. (AP) — A high school student in Palm Beach County has been diagnosed with whooping cough.
Health department spokesman Tim O'Connor says the Palm Beach Central High student has been asked to stay home after his diagnosis on Thursday. He's expected to make a full recovery.
The Palm Beach Post (http://pbpo.st/1QRhRnn ) reports seven classrooms have been quarantines and students will be offered booster shots of the vaccine at the school on Friday.
Whooping cough is a bacterial infection that begins with cold-like symptoms but the patient ends up with coughing fits. It is highly contagious but treatable with antibiotics.
O'Connor says there have been 12 cases of whooping cough reported Palm Beach County this year. Health officials say there were about 300 cases in Florida in 2015, down from around 600 last year.
