LOGAN — Utah State sophomore forward David Collette is moving away from the Logan-based institution, Aggie head coach Tim Duryea has confirmed.

The first-year head coach confirmed via a statement that the 6-foot-10, 235-pound redshirt sophomore from Murray High has decided to leave the program.

"I was shocked when he came into my office today and said he was going to quit," Duryea said in a release. "I think there were a lot of factors in play that, unfortunately, have become a trend in college basketball of schools poaching other schools' players.

"I don't feel good and don't like how things transpired, but we will move on and get ready for our season opener on Friday."

A source confirmed to KSL.com that Collette intends to transfer to another school, but that source declined to speculate further on the former Murray standout's future destination. Collette used a redshirt season before serving a two-year LDS Church mission in Charlotte, North Carolina and returning ahead of the 2013-14 season.

If Collette transfers to a Division I school, he would be ineligible to play for one year.

Collette started all 31 games for the Aggies last year, finishing second on the team with 12.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game just a few months after returning from the mission field.

He had 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in an exhibition win over Oklahoma Panhandle State, and added 22 points and five rebounds in a loss to Cal State Monterey Bay last week.

The former first-team all-state selection by the Deseret News was expected to start in the Aggies' season opener Friday against Weber State, and all signs indicated to him playing a larger role with a team that returned all five starters from last season's fifth-place finish in the Mountain West Conference. He also drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cap a 62-61 road win for the Aggies over Boise State, an NCAA Tournament team and one of the top squads in the MWC a year ago.

Collette led the team and the conference with a 59.1 shooting percentage, making 163-of-276 shots from the floor.

The Aggies open the season at 7 p.m. Friday at Weber State's Dee Events Center in Ogden.
