NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow Jones industrial average is making something of a comeback after plunging 1,000 points minutes after the market opened this morning. The Dow has been only about 100 points in the red in midday trading. A wave of selling has circled the globe after a historic plunge in Chinese stocks. The declines sent a shiver of fear through Americans who have retirement accounts or are saving to buy a home.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana man is expected to face a first-degree murder charge, now that the state trooper he's accused of shooting in the head has died. Senior Trooper Steven Vincent was trying to help a motorist stranded in a ditch. Authorities say Kevin Daigle emerged from his pickup truck with a shotgun and opened fire. Other motorists wrestled Daigle to the ground.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Another Senate Democrat has come out in support of the Iran nuclear agreement being pushed by President Barack Obama. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan says the "imminent threat of Iran having a nuclear weapon" outweighs any flaws in the international agreement. Stabenow is the 28th Senate Democrat to back the deal. Thirty-four votes would be needed to sustain Obama's veto of any resolution of disapproval.
PARIS (AP) — Three Americans — looking slightly overwhelmed as well as slightly under-dressed — have received France's highest honor. French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH' oh-LAWND') presented U.S. Airman Spencer Stone, National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, and their longtime friend Anthony Sadler with the Legion of Honor for subduing a heavily armed attacker on a high-speed train. A British businessman who jumped into the fray was also honored.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The head of an international gay rights organization is telling the U.N. Security Council that the Islamic State extremist group has claimed to have executed at least 30 people for sodomy. Jessica Stern says fear of the group has fueled violence by other militias and "private actors" against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender individuals. This marks the first time the Council has met on gay rights.
