ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece is receiving the first portion of a final 86 billion euro ($95.6 billion) bailout today. Most of today's 13 billion-euro ($14.5 billion) payment is earmarked for repaying debts and the remainder for settling arrears to public sector suppliers. Without the rescue loans the country would have defaulted on its debts and faced being forced out of the eurozone.
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A ferry carrying about 2,500 migrants has docked in Greece's main port of Piraeus (py-REE'-uhs) near Athens. The ferry arriving today was chartered by the government and served as a registration center on the eastern Aegean island of Kos this week. This year, Greece has been overwhelmed by record numbers of migrants arriving on its eastern Aegean islands, with more than 160,000 landing so far.
TWISP, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say three firefighters were killed in north-central Washington state when their vehicle crashed and was likely caught by flames. Four other firefighters were injured Wednesday, but it's not clear if they were involved in the accident. The news came after officials urged people in the popular outdoor-recreation centers of Twisp and Wintrop to evacuate.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — At least nine people have been arrested in St. Louis as demonstrators gathered last night to protest the fatal police shooting just hours earlier of a black 18-year-old who police say pulled a gun on them. Police say Mansur Ball-Bey pointed a gun at them as he was fleeing a home where officers had served a search warrant. Police say crack cocaine was found at or near the home, and last year illegal guns were found during a police search.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Pedestrians walking into Tijuana, Mexico from the U.S. no longer have an uninterrupted stroll. Mexicans can get in one line and be waved through. Foreigners get in another line, and they have to show a passport, fill out a form, and if staying for more than a week, pay roughly $20 for a six-month permit. Mexican immigration officials say the change is "about putting our house in order."
