BOISE, Idaho (AP) — This summer's massive fires have strained resources across the West to the point that wildfire managers are being forced to let some fires burn unchecked. Nearly 29,000 firefighters are battling some 100 large blazes across the West, but it hasn't been enough. In northern Idaho, private citizens have even jumped on fire lines to help overwhelmed firefighters.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — More mandatory evacuations have been ordered in northern Idaho near Kamiah and others have been told to be ready to get out as a group of fires burning timber and brush in rugged terrain expanded to more than 100 square miles today. Shelters say they're having a hard keeping up with the number of evacuees.

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Idaho Sen. Jim Risch used a recent energy meeting to call on the state to take action on two proposed shipments of spent nuclear fuel. The Post Register reports that Risch said that the shipments bound for Idaho National Laboratory still haven't been approved. He says that if Idaho doesn't accept the shipments, another state will.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church for the first time is appointing women to three high-level church councils previously reserved only for men. Scholars and Latter-day Saint feminists say the move marks a small, but noteworthy step in an ongoing push to increase visibility and prominence of women in the faith.
