More than 1,000 people are battling the massive fires near Chelan (shuh-LAN') in Washington state that have burned more than 170 square miles and destroyed an estimated 75 buildings.

JAYAPURA, Indonesia (AP) — Heavy fog and bad weather are still hampering rescuers who are trying to remove bodies from the site of a plane crash in eastern Indonesia. BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio mother is accused of killing her three young sons because her husband ignored their daughter. Police say Brittany Pilkington calmly called 911 on Tuesday to report that her baby son wasn't breathing, and then hours later confessed to killing him and her two other young sons over the past several months. The 3-year-old daughter is in the custody of the Logan County child welfare agency.
