Fathers Matter

There is a growing trend in the nation towards the belief that fathers are expendable. I feel concerned about this belief because it is completely false. I was flabbergasted when I researched some of the statistics about homes without a significant presence of a father. I have included the link to these startling statistics. Just one of the statistics state that by the age of 18, more than half of our nations children will have spent a significant portion of their childhood living apart from their father. Children who are raised without a father in their home are statistically at a significant disadvantage.

I think the large divorce rate is one reason it is easy in our society to forget the father role. Divorce is more commonplace and statistically, more women are in the single parent role. This naturally leads away from emphasis on a child's relationship with his father. Visitation rights that provide only a minimum amount of time for the child and father to spend together are not conducive to creating a significant presence in a child's life.

A tip for single mothers: If a child's father does not live in the home, strong male role models can make an impact. Male role models serve to teach children, boys especially, how to control emotions and behaviors as well as develop appropriate relationships.

In my work as a relationship coach, I see many chains being broken. Where there have been bad fathering traditions handed down, many of you have risen above them. You have broken the chain and become excellent fathers. My hat's off to you. That is our goal, to change the world one relationship at a time, one child at a time.
