KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan authorities say there are reports of many critical injuries among the more than 80 people wounded in a suicide bombing in eastern Afghanistan that killed at least 30 people. Officials say the bomber triggered an explosives-laden motorcycle at a bank branch in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad where both military personnel and civilians were gathered to receive their monthly salaries. The bank branch is located in a crowded commercial district.

SYDNEY (AP) — Australia says five people are under arrest in a foiled plot to attack a Veterans' Day ceremony. Four 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old are accused plotting an Islamic State group-inspired terrorist attack that police say involved edged weapons, though there's no information that a beheading was planned. Police officers were to be included as targets.

MILAN (AP) — Italian officials say a group of 20 migrants fleeing Libya had been badly burned in a cooking gas explosion and forced onto a smuggler's boat without treatment. The group was found adrift at sea yesterday. Italian ships have picked up 10,000 people, many of them refugees of war and persecution, over the past week, an unprecedented number in such a short period.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A natural gas pipeline explosion at a California sheriff's gun range shot flames well over 100 feet into the air, left 11 people injured and brought traffic on a busy highway to a halt for several hours. Authorities and witnesses say the explosion on a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. pipe happened at the Fresno County Sheriff's gun range while an equipment operator was using a front-loader to build a dirt berm to confine gunfire to the range. Three of the injured were in critical condition.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich describes the late Cardinal Francis George as "a man of great courage." George, a vigorous defender of Roman Catholic orthodoxy who played a key role in the church's response to the clergy sex abuse scandal and led the U.S. bishops' fight against THE Affordable Care Act, has died after a long fight with cancer. He was 78.
