TULSA, Okla. (AP) — "It can happen to anyone." That's what Robert Bates says about confusing his stun gun and his handgun -- which he says is what caused the fatal shooting of a suspect he was helping to arrest in Tulsa, Oklahoma, earlier this month. Bates is a 73-year-old insurance executive -- but he's also a volunteer deputy. And he's rejecting questions about his qualifications, telling NBC's "Today" show that he's certified to be a reserve deputy. He's apologizing to the family of the man who was killed, and says, "I rate this as number one on my list of things in my life that I regret." Bates is charged with second-degree manslaughter.

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Civil rights groups in South Carolina want a federal investigation of other shootings involving police in the county where a black man was fatally shot by a white officer this month. News media outlets report that representatives of the North Charleston NAACP and two other groups said today that they don't have faith in the local police, prosecutor or the State Law Enforcement Division to look into such cases. Walter Scott was shot and killed by North Charleston Officer Michael Slager on April 4 as he ran following a traffic stop. Slager is charged with murder.

RUSKIN, Fla. (AP) — His wife is describing Doug Hughes as a law-abiding citizen and a patriot. Alena Hughes spoke to a Florida TV station (WFLA) today about the man who flew a gyrocopter onto the U.S. Capitol lawn on Wednesday to push for stronger campaign finance laws. She says her husband is "brave" -- and adds that if something had happened to him, it would have hurt their family. They have a 12-year-old daughter. Doug Hughes is facing charges, but he's been released from jail and is expected back in Florida.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have finished the day with some sharp declines, after a similar performance in Europe. Investors are worried that Greece may default on its debt, and leave the euro currency union. The Dow industrials lost 279 points -- after being down by as much as 357 points earlier. The S&P 500 lost 23 points.

NEW YORK (AP) — TV's "Dr. Oz" is defending himself against 10 doctors who are accusing him of promoting "quack treatments" on his TV show. Mehmet Oz released a statement today saying that his show provides "multiple points of view" including his own. His critics sent a letter to Columbia University this week, urging the school to remove Oz from its faculty because of a "lack of integrity." Oz is vice chairman of Columbia's surgery department and still occasionally teaches.
