LAS VEGAS (AP) — The wife of a longtime television station owner, Nevada philanthropist and education advocate launched a foundation in his memory on Wednesday with a pledge to fund college scholarships for 25 Las Vegas third-graders.
The Rogers Foundation chief Beverly Rogers also outlined plans to offer several grants for schools to support artistic and academic achievements.
Organization spokeswoman Darcy Neighbors says the scholarship announcement was made during an event at a classroom at Reynaldo Martinez Elementary School in North Las Vegas.
The nonprofit foundation is in memory of Jim Rogers, who died last June at age 75.
His company, Sunbelt Communications, owned 14 TV stations in five Western states including the NBC affiliate in Las Vegas.
Rogers also served without pay from 2005 to 2009 as chancellor of Nevada's higher education system.
