BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Interior Secretary Sally Jewell is calling for a new wildfire-fighting strategy that protects sagebrush country in the intermountain West that supports cattle ranching as well as a struggling bird species. She issued an order today seeking a "science-based" strategy that safeguards the greater sage grouse while contending with fires that have been especially destructive in the Great Basin region of Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Oregon and California.

MULLAN, Idaho (AP) — A northern Idaho snowmobiler has been rescued after becoming trapped in a steep Montana drainage. Shoshone County Sheriff Mitch Alexander says five friends followed 54-year-old Barry Sadler's track and found him early this morning in the Brimstone Creek area. Alexander says Sadler was dehydrated and exhausted but otherwise all right. He was last seen Sunday afternoon.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho tribes are demanding Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter cease all use of slot-like machines known as instant horse racing terminals. The tribes say the machines don't use the type of wagering allowed under Idaho law. Instant racing was legalized in in Idaho in 2013 after horse industry representatives argued they needed them to save their dying trade.

LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that dredging can start next week on the lower Snake River to aid barge traffic to and from Lewiston. The Lewiston Tribune reports the judge in Seattle yesterday rejected a request by environmental groups and the Nez Perce Tribe to halt the dredging until their lawsuit can be heard.
