SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — Officials say ships and planes are resuming their search for AirAsia Flight 8501 which went missing more than 24 hours ago on a flight over water from Indonesia to Singapore. An air force official says visibility is good. The Airbus A320, with162 passengers and crew aboard, vanished Sunday morning in airspace thick with dense storms.
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — At least one person is dead and two are injured after a fire aboard a ferry in the Adriatic Sea. Rescue efforts are underway. Hundreds remain trapped. Choppy seas are hampering evacuations. The Italian Navy says 190 of the 478 people aboard the ship have been evacuated. The ferry was sailing from Greece to Italy when the fire broke out.
CASTLE HILLS, Texas (AP) — Five people are dead following a fire at a senior-living apartment building in south-central Texas. Authorities say 11 other residents of the building in the San Antonio suburb of Castle Hills have been hospitalized after this morning's blaze. At least one of the residents is in critical condition. Some 150 residents were taken to a local high school.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's police commissioner says rank-and-file officers and much of America's police leadership feels under attack, including "from the federal government at the highest levels" following demonstrations over police killings of unarmed black men. Bill Bratton tells NBC he wants a "lot less rhetoric and a lot more dialogue" to defuse the tension between police officers and the population they protect.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) —The city of Ferguson, Missouri, says a police department spokesman has been suspended after referring to the Michael Brown memorial as "a pile of trash." The memorial at the site of Brown's death in August was damaged last week after a car apparently hit it. The city says the spokesman is on unpaid leave while "disciplinary proceedings" begin.
