LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two men who posed as religious missionaries to storm into a Las Vegas house have been sentenced to seven years to life in prison after being found guilty of kidnapping, armed robbery and other charges. Abraham Austin Jr. and Robert Estall II were sentenced yesterday, after a jury convicted them in September of charges also including conspiracy, armed burglary and battery. The 29-year-old Austin and 26-year-old Estall used to serve in the Air Force together.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — After a Christmas tree seller dropped off piles of unsold stock at a tree-recycling drop-off in the Las Vegas area, Clark County officials say the trees would be free to anyone wanting one on the holiday's eve. Clark County spokesman Erik Pappa said today he didn't know who dropped off the hundreds of trees, many still wrapped in twine. Pappa says the trees were dropped off at Sunset Park near McCarran International Airport.
YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) — A former Mineral County Sheriff's deputy has been arrested on charges accusing him of stealing a jail inmate's medication. Mineral County Sheriff Stewart Handte says 34-year-old Saverio "Sammy" Scarlata was taken into custody at his home in Hawthorne yesterday after a lengthy investigation. Handte says Scarlata was working as a deputy at the time of the incidents but subsequently terminated for unrelated personnel matters.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno police say they have located the driver of a second car involved in an accident that killed a pedestrian this week, and he's cooperating with investigators. Officer Tim Broadway said today the man told detectives he thought he struck a large animal on North Virginia Street about 4:30 a.m. Monday. The victim, 54-year-old Vincent Yowell of Reno, was killed when he was hit by two vehicles while walking in a crosswalk in front of the Bonanza Casino. A woman driving the first car pulled over and called for help before the second car ran over the man.
