WASHINGTON (AP) — Because of a string of security lapses, the U.S. Secret Service didn't realize for four days that an Idaho man had fired a high-powered rifle at the White House in 2011. The Washington Post reports it has found that the Secret Service bungled the response to the shooting. Oscar R. Ortega-Hernandez was sentenced to 25 years in prison for firing at least seven bullets at the White House. The president and Michelle Obama were away, but one daughter was home.

MERIDIAN, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho State Police want residents to be wary of telephone calls from people claiming to be one of their officers. The scammer, whose caller ID says the Idaho State Police, appears to be targeting students, professors and people from other countries. The scammer says he has an arrest warrant for that person and they will be deported if they don't pay a fine.

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Emergency planners say a digital library developed by Idaho researchers has become a critical tool in preparing for major disasters. The Infrastructure Protection Digital Library is a searchable database that gathers and customizes emergency-related documents, images and websites on local, regional and federal levels. Before the library, most of the information was disconnected and required extensive searching.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — A group of BYU students is protesting the Mormon church-owned school's ban on something its namesake once sported: a beard. About 50 students biked, skateboarded or in-line skated their way from the Provo City Library to campus during the "Bike for Beards" protest on Friday night. Protest organizer Shane Pittson says he finds the ban on facial hair other than mustaches outdated.
