AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas vows a quick appeal of a federal judge's ruling that put the state's tough abortion restrictions on hold. The judge found efforts to hold abortion clinics to hospital-level operating standards unconstitutionally restrictive. The law was to take effect Monday. Lawmakers said the measure would protect women's health.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California court ruling that struck down tenure and other job protections for the state's teachers is under appeal. California Attorney General Kamala Harris filed the appeal late Friday on behalf of the governor and the state. The appeal says the judge's decision lacked details on the legal basis for his reasoning.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California may soon be regulating groundwater for the first time under a package of bills awaiting the governor's signature. The state is in the midst of its worst drought in a generation. Groundwater accounts for 60 percent of the state's water use during drought years, yet it is not as regulated and closely managed as water from reservoirs, rivers and streams. The pumping has been so great in recent years that wells are running dry.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon has put a $560 million price tag on recent U.S. military operations in Iraq, including airstrikes and surveillance flights. Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, says costs were lower in June but escalated after the airstrikes in northern Iraq began this month. He says the daily cost is about $7.5 million.
