President Petro Poroshenko today called an emergency meeting of the nation's security council, as a strategic southeastern Ukrainian town (Novoazovsk) appears firmly under the control of Russia-backed separatists.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Just weeks before the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is set to resume, Australian officials say the sonar hunt for the wreckage may extend farther south than expected. They say that's based on new analysis of a failed attempt by airline officials on the ground to phone the plane soon after it disappeared from radar on March 8.
WASHINGTON (AP) — After a bleak start to the year, the U.S. economy rebounded vigorously in the April-June quarter. The government says it grew at a brisk annual rate of 4.2 percent, slightly faster than first estimated. The upward revision supported expectations that the second half of 2014 will prove far stronger than the first half.
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A third day of huge waves is expected today off the Southern California coast, thanks to a far-off Hurricane Marie. Yesterday, spectators lined the shore of the Wedge in Newport Beach to watch the world's best surfers ride 20-foot waves. And swells generated by Hurricane Cristobal are affecting Bermuda and parts of the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina to Long Island in New York.
NEW YORK (AP) — A spokesman for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt says the couple got married Saturday in France. The wedding took place in a small chapel, a private ceremony attended by family and friends. In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Pitt and Jolie obtained a marriage license from a California judge. The judge also conducted the ceremony in France. The couple's children took part in the wedding.
