WASHINGTON (AP) — Russia's ambassador to the United Nations is critical of a request by President Barack Obama for Congress to approve $500 million in arms and training for Syrian rebels. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin says the aid would drag out the conflict. Russia is one of Syria's strongest supporters. The train-and-equip mission would be overseen by the Pentagon.

IZVARYNE, Ukraine (AP) — Thousands of Ukrainians in cars stuffed with belongings are lined up at the border to cross into Russia, some vowing never to return. Many said they were most frightened for their children and desperate to take them to safety. The exodus comes as shaky cease-fire in eastern Ukraine is coming to an end. Pro-Russia separatists have been battling government forces.

HONOLULU (AP) — More than one month of naval maneuvers involving the militaries of 22 nations is underway in Hawaii. The Rim of the Pacific drills are hosted every two years by the U.S. Pacific Fleet. For the first time, China has sent vessels to participate.

ARTESIA, N.M. (AP) — Officials say a detention center being opened in southeastern New Mexico to deal with the surge in women caught crossing illegally with children into the U.S. from Central America will be focused on deporting the immigrants quickly. A senior immigration official said the goal is to process the immigrants and have them deported within 10 to 15 days to send a message back to their home countries that there are consequences for illegal immigration.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Track fans at the U.S. Track and Field Championships have given a standing ovation to an 800 meter runner who finished dead last in her heat. Alysia Montano clocked a time nearly 35 seconds slower than her personal best. But she's also 34 weeks pregnant. Montano ran at a casual pace and says she was given a go-ahead by her doctor.
