The mayor says the local army and police force pulled out when the militants took control and government offices were being sacked by the militants. A town along the Syrian border fell to militants yesterday.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) — After a land and air battle, officials say a five-acre brush fire in Northern California has been contained, but not before destroying at least one home and heavily damaging two others. FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — Colorado officials say they don't think drinking-water was affected by a crude oil storage tank spill into a northern river. Todd Hartman of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources says the bank where the storage tank sat next to the river was undercut by the high spring river flows, causing it to drop and break a valve. Cleanup crews are on the job.
