Shariah law in parts of Iraq...Drones hit targets in Pakistan...Tanks enter Ukraine

BAGHDAD (AP) — The militant group that has taken control of some key cities in Iraq says it will start implementing its strict version of Islamic law in Mosul and other areas it now controls. It says women should stay in their homes for reasons of modesty, and that thieves will have their hands cut off. And it's telling Sunni members of the military and police to abandon their posts and "repent" -- or else "face only death."

ISLAMABAD (AP) — After a nearly six-month break, U.S. drones are again hitting militant hideouts in northwestern Pakistan. Officials say 13 suspected insurgents were killed overnight as the program led by the CIA resumed. The strikes were quickly condemned by Pakistan's government.

MOSCOW (AP) — Ukraine's interior minister says three tanks have crossed into Ukrainian territory from Russia and were attacked by his country's forces. The Interfax news agency quoted the Ukrainian official as saying that a "column" with armored vehicles crossed from Russia through border control points controlled by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. He said the incursion took place despite Russian statements of interest in a peaceful solution and an increase in border controls.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Analysts say any disappointment in the retail sales numbers for May is offset by a gain in April that turns out to be better than initially reported. Retail sales in May rose three-tenths of a point, helped by a jump in demand for autos. The result follows a gain of a half-point in April, revised upward from an initial one-tenth of one percent. Paul Dales of Capital Economics says it "won't be long before sales start rising more rapidly."

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) — Former President George H.W. Bush has celebrated his 90th birthday by making a tandem parachute jump near his summer home in Maine. The 41st president jumped out of a helicopter today while harnessed to a retired member of the Army's parachute team. With the jump, Bush made good on a promise from five years ago, when he also celebrated his birthday by skydiving. The first time Bush jumped from an airplane was when his plane was shot down in World War II over the Pacific.
