SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The deputy to Utah's top law enforcement official is advising state lawmakers to avoid pushing the federal government to turn over Utah's public lands. Assistant Attorney General Tony Rampton says filing a lawsuit or legislative measure is a long shot with too many unknowns. Utah set a cutoff of Dec. 31 for federal officials to turn over millions of acres.

KANAB, Utah (AP) — Federal officials say some oil discovered earlier within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is decades old and could cause more damage if officials attempt to clean it up. The Bureau of Land Management says it's monitoring the area and allowing the oil deposits to biodegrade naturally.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — About 20 protesters have set up camp at an oil sands operation in eastern Utah. U.S. Oil Sands was scheduled to begin mining this summer on school trust lands, where workers have dug a test pit. Utah Tar Sands Resistance says such operations pose risks to wildlife and to water supplies used for drinking and irrigation.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah wildlife officials say a black bear in pursuit of nectar and peanuts has poked into a cabin in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Scott Root of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources says the bear was likely wading near the river Monday when it picked up scents from a hummingbird feeder and a five-gallon bucket of peanuts on a back porch nearby. Wildlife authorities tranquilized the bear and released the animal in a remote part of the canyon after it woke up.
