WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is leading the nation in remembering its war heroes in a Memorial Day tribute at Arlington National Cemetery. Under cloudless skies and in brilliant sunshine, Obama walked to the site of the Tomb of the Unknowns, listened to the playing of "The Star Spangled Banner" and Taps and then placed a wreath.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration has accidentally revealed the name of the CIA's top official in Afghanistan. The officer's name — identified as "chief of station" in Kabul — was on a list of 15 senior American officials who met with President Barack Obama during Saturday's visit to Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. The list went to the White House "press pool" email distribution list, which contains as many as 6,000 journalists.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — A sheriff's helicopter is surveying an area in the high country of western Colorado where a large mudslide struck yesterday. Rescue teams are searching for three men reported missing, but the Mesa County Sheriff's Department describes the slide area as "very unstable." It's estimated to be 4 miles long, 2 miles wide and as much as 250 feet deep. However, no structures or major roads have been affected.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — A negotiator says he expects a Palestinian unity government backed by rivals Hamas and Fatah to be announced this week. President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement says the new cabinet will be declared Thursday. The government is to prepare for 2015 elections. Hamas seized Gaza in 2007, leaving Abbas' forces confined to the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The West views the Islamic militant Hamas as a terror group.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Police in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, are investigating a shooting in a hotel room late yesterday that left two people injured. It's the fourth shooting in two days at the popular beach town. Three people were killed and another injured in a separate hotel shooting Saturday night. Police say no arrests have been made.
