BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan (AP) — President Barack Obama is making it clear the U.S. will likely maintain a limited role in Afghanistan even after its combat mission ends this year. The president slipped into Afghanistan on Sunday for a surprise Memorial Day visit with the troops. ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Officials say a massive wildfire burning in Alaska's Kenai (KEEN'-eye) Peninsula south of Anchorage has grown significantly in windy conditions and mandatory evacuations are underway. A spokeswoman for the Alaska Interagency Management Team says 1,000 structures are in the area under evacuation. She says the fire is nearly 218 square miles.

GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — It's not clear why Santa Barbara County, California, sheriff's deputies were not aware of Elliot Rodger's threatening online videos before it was too late. A family attorney says Rodger's family called police after being alarmed by videos "regarding suicide and the killing of people." Rodger went on rampage that left seven dead, including himself, and 13 others injured.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican authorities say they've captured a regional leader of a cartel who controlled illegal trafficking of drugs, guns and money in a frontier region bordering Texas. The Federal security commissioner identified the man taken into custody as Juan Manuel Rodriguez Garcia. A U.S. official says he's the Gulf Cartel's commander along the Rio Grande.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — America has its first Indianapolis 500 winner in eight years. Ryan Hunter-Reay (ray) made a dramatic pass of Helio Castroneves (EHL'-ee-oh kas-troh-NEH'-vehz) on the final lap to win today's race in the second-closest finish in history. Castroneves finished second in his bid for his fourth Indy 500 victory. Marco Andretti was third and Carlos Munoz was fourth.
